How to choose your photo film?

The choice of the film format

There are three categories of photographic film formats. Depending on your film camera, you will have to choose the compatible film format.

The 24x36 format

It is also called the 35mm format because of its width. Originally created for the cinema, it was adapted in 1923 by Oscar Barnack in his Leica prototype. Thanks to its very small size, it quickly became popular.

This format of film is compatible with all cameras called "24x36" such as SLR cameras (single lens reflex).

Compatible film cameras: Leica M, Leica M2, Leica M3, Leica M4(P), Leica M5, Leica M6, Leica M7, Leica MP, Leica MA, all Nikon F SLRs, all Minolta SLRs, all Canon film SLRs type AE1, AV1, A1, EOS, Pentax film SLRs, but also point-and-shoot compacts such as Contax T, Contax G1 and G2, Ricoh GR1, Zenit, Fed, Zorki (non exhaustive list).

The medium format

Medium format cameras use 120 film, which is a 61.5 mm wide film under a protective paper, wrapped around an axis. The classic image formats are 4.5x6; 6x6; 6x7; 6x8; 6x9 and 6x12.
